Arts Council Karachi Holds Condolence Reference for Writer Syed Mazhar Jameel
The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi held a condolence reference in memory of renowned Pakistani writer Syed Mazhar Jameel at Haseena Moin Hall in Karachi. The event began with the recitation of the Holy Quran and was attended by a large number of literary and social figures.

Among those present were President Arts Council Muhammad Ahmed Shah, noted poet Iftikhar Arif, former chief justice Gulzar Ahmed, and Justice (R) Maqbool Baqar, along with several scholars, writers, and associates of the late intellectual.
Speakers paid rich tribute to Syed Mazhar Jameel’s contributions to literature, law, and intellectual thought. Gulzar Ahmed recalled his professional association with him, describing him as a dedicated, compassionate, and highly capable lawyer who also possessed refined literary taste.
Muhammad Ahmed Shah highlighted his long-standing association with the Arts Council, noting his active participation since the first Aalmi Urdu Conference and his role in strengthening the institution’s literary standards. He described Jameel as a patient and positive individual with a natural ability to resolve issues amicably.
Iftikhar Arif emphasized that Jameel’s literary and scholarly work was deeply influenced by the Progressive Movement, adding that his contributions in both Sindhi and Urdu languages remain his enduring legacy.
Prominent academic Sahar Ansari shared memories of meeting him in 1959 and noted his efforts in promoting literary activities in Sukkur. Scholar Jaffer Ahmed highlighted his writings on Sindh, reflecting his deep engagement with regional history and culture.
Other speakers, including Naazir Mahmood, Fatima Hasan, and Mubeen Mirza, described him as a committed scholar who dedicated his life to knowledge, research, and intellectual growth.
Family members also spoke on the occasion. Ibad-ul-Haq Mazhar Jameel and Samad-ul-Haq Mazhar Jameel expressed gratitude to attendees and shared personal reflections, highlighting his role as a caring father and mentor.
Scholars such as Sahar Imdad Hussaini and Zia Awan noted that his writings reflected a deep love for Sindh’s culture, language, and heritage, while Mehnaz Rahman described him as not only a great intellectual but also an exemplary human being.
Speakers including Iqbal Khurshid recalled his admiration for Sufi poets like Sachal Sarmast and Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, stressing the need to carry forward such literary traditions.
The event concluded with prayers for the departed soul, while participants acknowledged that Syed Mazhar Jameel’s intellectual and literary contributions will continue to inspire future generations.
