According to authorities, heavily armed attackers opened fire with automatic weapons on the police facility and the customs office situated along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) route. The officials martyred in the assault were identified as customs officer Israr Khan and police constable Mohammad Bilal.
The injured personnel, Hazrat Umar and Khayal Mohammad, were shifted to the trauma centre at the District Headquarters Hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment.
Police said the assailants also targeted passenger buses travelling along the CPEC route, triggering panic among commuters. During the attack, a customs department vehicle was set on fire. Security forces retaliated promptly, forcing the attackers to flee the scene.
A heavy contingent of police and security personnel reached the area shortly after the incident and launched a search operation in nearby localities. Investigations are underway as authorities continue efforts to track down those responsible.
The district has witnessed a surge in militant violence in recent weeks. Earlier this month, at least four policemen, including a station house officer (SHO), were martyred in an attack on a police party in the Wanda Budh area of Paniala. On January 24, five people, including a peace committee leader, were killed and 10 others injured in a suspected suicide blast during a wedding ceremony in the district.
