Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday strongly condemned the targeting of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint strikes carried out by the United States and Israel, describing the action as a violation of international law.
The Iranian government earlier confirmed that Khamenei had been martyred in Israeli and US air strikes that began on February 28, triggering heightened tensions across the Middle East.
In a post on X, the prime minister said it was an established international norm that heads of state or government should not be targeted under any circumstances. He termed the killing a deeply concerning development with serious implications for regional stability.
Expressing solidarity with Iran, Shehbaz Sharif extended condolences on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan, calling Khamenei’s death a grave loss for the Iranian nation.
“The Government and the people of Pakistan join the people of Iran in their hour of grief and sorrow and extend the most sincere condolences on the martyrdom of His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei,” the premier said.
He also offered prayers for the departed leader and expressed hope that the Iranian people would be granted patience and strength to endure the loss.
