Spanish giants Real Madrid said on Thursday they had submitted all available evidence to UEFA in support of Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior, following allegations of racist abuse during a Champions League match against Benfica.

The incident occurred during Tuesday’s knockout phase play-off first leg in Lisbon, which was temporarily halted for around 10 minutes after Vinicius informed the referee that Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni had directed a racist remark toward him during an on-field confrontation.
Prestianni has denied the allegation. The exchange took place after Vinicius celebrated a goal with a dance in front of home supporters, during which the Argentine player was seen covering his mouth while speaking.
UEFA confirmed on Wednesday that it had opened an investigation into “allegations of discriminatory behaviour.” Real Madrid, in an official statement, described the incidents as “unacceptable episodes of racism” and reaffirmed its full support for the player.
The club also thanked the wider football community for showing solidarity with Vinicius, who has repeatedly been subjected to racist abuse since joining Real Madrid in 2018.
Benfica responded with a statement backing Prestianni, alleging a “defamation campaign” against the midfielder. Meanwhile, team manager Jose Mourinho questioned Vinicius’s goal celebration, adding further controversy to the incident.
UEFA’s disciplinary process is ongoing, with potential sanctions expected depending on the outcome of the investigation.
