The decision was taken during a high-level meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.
The meeting reviewed progress on key transport initiatives, including the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, and discussed measures aimed at enhancing commuter convenience and strengthening Karachi’s overall transport network.
The session was attended by Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, Yellow Line Project Director Kamal Dayo, and Trans Karachi CEO Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, along with engineers and project consultants.
During the briefing, Trans Karachi officials presented a detailed update on development work related to the Red Line BRT corridor, highlighting progress achieved so far, existing challenges, and upcoming targets. Authorities informed the meeting that construction work was ongoing, though some hurdles remained.
Addressing participants, Memon said the overall pace of work was satisfactory but needed further acceleration. He directed relevant departments to ensure daily monitoring and stressed that timely completion of the project remained a top priority to reduce traffic congestion and commuting difficulties faced by citizens.
The minister also instructed authorities to strictly implement alternative traffic management plans during construction and launch an effective public awareness campaign to minimise inconvenience to residents.
He further directed officials to expedite the rollout of new buses, prioritising routes where commuters face the most severe transport shortages. According to Memon, expanding bus services would provide safe, affordable and dignified travel options for Karachi residents.
Additionally, he ordered the immediate start of construction work on the second phase of the Senator Taj Haider Bridge and called for prompt action by all concerned institutions.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Memon said that alongside BRT projects, the introduction of new buses would help transform urban mobility and move Karachi towards a modern and efficient public transport system.
