Despite the harsh conditions, Anum completed the ultra marathon with determination and resilience. Historic achievement Speaking to a private television channel, Anum dedicated her victory to the women of Pakistan, particularly female runners. Moreover, she expressed hope of representing Pakistan in more international endurance competitions and taking part in even tougher challenges in the future. Overcoming fear and adversity Anum said she understood the risks before entering the race. Besides difficult terrain, competitors faced threats from lightning and wild animals. She recalled seeing a leopard about 200 feet ahead during training for a 40-kilometre trail race. However, she said the encounter strengthened her confidence instead of discouraging her. “Once I overcame the fear, I focused entirely on my goal — and achieved it,” she said. Balancing sport and family Anum explained that mountaineering and trail running require different skills and present different risks. However, she noted that trail-running events usually take less time, allowing her to balance competitive sport with her responsibilities as a mother. Meanwhile, she stressed the importance of maintaining fitness throughout the year. She said regular exercise is essential for everyone, whether they compete professionally or simply want to stay healthy. As part of her training, Anum climbs the equivalent of 100 floors of stairs to prepare for future endurance challenges.
