At least 51 Indian citizens recruited into the Russian Army have been killed during the war in Ukraine, according to figures released by Indian officials. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri provided the figures during a media briefing in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. Misri said 227 Indian citizens had been recruited into the Russian military. Of these, 51 had been killed in the conflict, while 139 had since been discharged from the Russian Army. Around two dozen Indian nationals remain in the Russian military, the foreign secretary said. The recruitment of Indian citizens into Russia’s armed forces has become an increasingly sensitive issue in India. Indian media reports have linked the enlistment of some young men to limited employment opportunities and unemployment. Indian media has also reported that the Supreme Court directed the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps to secure the return of Indian nationals serving in the Russian armed forces. New Delhi has repeatedly pursued the issue with Moscow as it seeks the discharge and safe return of the remaining Indian citizens involved. The latest figures underline the risks faced by foreign nationals recruited into Russia’s military as the war in Ukraine continues.
