Islamabad Model Jail Government sets next month for opening of long-delayed project

Islamabad Model Jail is expected to open next month after Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reviewed progress on the long-delayed project with Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry.

The project has remained pending for about 15 years. At a meeting on Thursday, Mr Naqvi directed officials to complete all outstanding work without further delay, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.

Officials briefed the meeting on the remaining construction, administrative arrangements and preparations for the inauguration. Mr Naqvi said all necessary work must finish before the facility opens and instructed the relevant institutions to coordinate closely.

He said there should be no further unnecessary delay in completing the project and ordered authorities to resolve all outstanding matters before the inauguration.

Talal Chaudhry told the meeting that he is personally overseeing the completion process. He said he visits the site every week to monitor progress and coordinate with the institutions involved.

The project is being developed in Sector H-16, Islamabad. Budget documents for the 2026-27 fiscal year show that the federal government allocated Rs1 billion for the project, which has a total estimated cost of Rs7.399 billion.

Earlier this month, Chaudhry inspected the final construction and operational arrangements at the facility. Officials said the project was moving towards completion and that security, administration and inmate facilities were among the areas being reviewed.

The meeting was attended by the director general of the Federal Investigation Agency, the Federal Prosecutor General, the inspector general of Islamabad Police, the director general of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency and other senior officials.
