According to the port administration, the National Dredging and Marine Services has launched the first large-scale dredging campaign at Karachi Port, with four major dredgers operating simultaneously for the first time over a four-month period.
The dredging work is aimed at deepening berths at the South Asia Pakistan Terminal as well as the Upper and Lower Harbor to accommodate larger vessels.
The administration said four types of dredgers — Rotor Drum, Athena, Abol, and Indus Dolphin — are participating in the operation together for the first time.
Officials added that upon completion of the dredging project, Karachi Port will be able to facilitate the movement of Panamax ships, a development expected to strengthen Karachi’s position as a regional transit and transshipment hub.
