OpenAI has launched its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.2, following an internal “code red” in early December, CEO Sam Altman revealed. The move temporarily paused non-core projects to accelerate development in response to Alphabet’s Google Gemini 3 release.

GPT-5.2 features notable enhancements in general intelligence, coding capabilities, and long-context comprehension, according to OpenAI. The company highlighted that the model is better equipped to create spreadsheets, build presentations, and handle complex multi-step tasks, offering increased economic value for users.
Altman acknowledged that while Google’s Gemini 3 has led several AI industry benchmarks, its impact on OpenAI’s performance metrics has been “less than feared.” Meanwhile, Disney announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, allowing the startup to incorporate Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel characters in its Sora AI video generator.
OpenAI confirmed that GPT-5.2 Instant, Thinking, and Pro editions will begin rolling out on ChatGPT Thursday for paid subscribers, while older models—including GPT-5.1, GPT-5, and GPT-4.1—will remain available through its API.
The launch marks a significant step in the intensifying competition between leading AI companies, as OpenAI and Google race to deliver increasingly sophisticated and commercially valuable AI tools.
