LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has been assigned significant new responsibilities within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), sources confirmed on Sunday.
Sarfaraz has been tasked with overseeing all matters related to the Pakistan Shaheens and the national Under-19 side. According to insiders, he will monitor the performance of coaching staff for both teams and supervise their domestic and international tours.
He is also expected to accompany the squads during training sessions and series held in Pakistan.
Sarfaraz, one of Pakistan’s most experienced wicketkeeper-batters, has enjoyed a prolific international career. He represented the national side in 54 Tests, scoring 3,031 runs with four centuries and 21 fifties. In 117 ODIs, he accumulated 2,315 runs, including two centuries and 11 half-centuries, while in 61 T20Is he scored 818 runs with three fifties.
As captain, Sarfaraz’s achievements remain notable. He famously led Pakistan to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy title, defeating India by 180 runs in the final, and held a 70% win rate during his ODI captaincy. In the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Pakistan won five out of nine matches under his leadership, registering a 62.5% win rate. His T20I captaincy record is even more impressive with a 78.37% win percentage, winning 29 of 37 matches.
The 38-year-old last represented Pakistan in the red-ball format during the 2023 Perth Test against Australia.
