Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday expressed optimism that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) would reach new heights under the leadership of the Arif Habib Consortium, saying the airline’s performance, punctuality, cabin service and professional standards were expected to improve significantly.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of transaction documents for PIA’s privatisation, the prime minister congratulated the nation on the landmark move, describing it as a major step toward reviving the national flag carrier.
He praised Arif Habib and his team as distinguished business leaders and ambassadors of Pakistan, acknowledging their contribution to the country’s economic progress.
PM Shehbaz said the new owners’ top priorities would be passenger comfort and safety. Recalling PIA’s golden era in the 1960s, he noted that the airline was once a prominent and respected name across Pakistan and in world capitals.
The premier also congratulated federal ministers and Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for their commitment to the national interest. He commended Adviser for Privatisation Muhammad Ali for successfully steering the privatisation process.
Highlighting transparency, PM Shehbaz said the entire bidding process was broadcast live and conducted openly. He disclosed that bidding closed at Rs180 billion, of which the consortium will invest Rs135 billion in improving the airline, while Rs55 billion will be paid to the government.
Expressing confidence in the new management, the prime minister said that through hard work and innovation, the consortium would restore PIA’s past glory. He added that the nation now expects world-class travel services and renewed international recognition for Pakistan.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and other federal ministers attended the ceremony.
Adviser for Privatisation Muhammad Ali briefed participants on the key aspects of the transaction, stating that the people of Pakistan would be the ultimate beneficiaries as PIA’s services are set to improve.
