The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) spokesperson Shazia Marri on Sunday sharply criticised the federal government, led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), for bypassing consultations with the PPP on critical decisions, including the establishment of the Pakistan Maritime and Seaport Authority. She warned that the government’s survival hinges on PPP’s support.
“While we have repeatedly stated our support for the federal government, it is important to note that the day we withdraw this support, the government will collapse,” Marri cautioned, adding, “Perhaps, the PML-N does not realise this.”
Marri disclosed that both the PPP and the Sindh government were not informed about the formation of the maritime authority. She also demanded the convening of the Council of Common Interests (CCI), overdue for 11 months, asserting that the prime minister is “constitutionally bound” to hold such meetings every three months.
“The Constitution is being openly violated,” Marri stated, demanding that the maritime authority issue be brought before the CCI and allies be consulted. She questioned the wisdom of making unilateral decisions, warning such actions would deepen rifts between allies.
The PPP has expressed dissatisfaction with various issues, including internet restrictions and the absence of federal ministers during parliamentary proceedings, leading to protests and walkouts by its lawmakers. While PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has urged continued engagement with the PML-N government, tensions remain high.
Marri urged adherence to constitutional principles, stating, “The opinion of allies and provinces should be considered before finalising maritime and seaport-related proposals. This approach would benefit everyone.”
