The Punjab Traffic Police has intensified its province-wide crackdown on traffic violations, issuing tens of thousands of challans within the past 24 hours in a major enforcement drive.
According to an official spokesperson, 63,970 vehicles and motorcycles were fined across the province in a single day, resulting in penalties amounting to Rs 84.29 million. The scale of the violations, officials said, reflects ongoing challenges in ensuring compliance with traffic rules.
Authorities also reported that 23,904 vehicles have been impounded at various police stations due to a range of serious or repeated traffic offences.
Helmet-related violations accounted for a significant share of the penalties. In just one day, police issued 28,000 challans for helmet non-compliance, while 4,312 cases were registered for repeated or more serious safety infractions.
To enhance monitoring and improve traffic management, the Punjab Traffic Police has begun deploying surveillance drones in Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, and Multan. These drones will be used to detect violations, observe congestion patterns, and support field teams in maintaining smoother traffic flow. Dedicated units from the Traffic Quick Response Force have also been mobilised to ensure rapid action against offenders.
Earlier proposals included raising traffic fines in Punjab to as high as Rs 20,000 and introducing a modern challan system featuring photographic and video evidence.
The ongoing crackdown forms part of a broader government initiative aimed at strengthening road safety, reducing accidents, and encouraging responsible driving behaviour across the province.
