Actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu surprised fans on Monday with her marriage to filmmaker Raj Nidimoru in a private ceremony at the serene Ling Bhairavi Temple inside the Isha Yoga Centre.
While photos from the ceremony showcased her understated red saree, it was her wedding ring that quickly became the centre of attention online. According to a jewellery expert, the ring features a rare portrait-cut diamond, a historic style known for its flat, transparent form and expansive surface.
“Samantha wore a portrait-cut diamond, a thin and flat stone with a large top area and almost no depth,” the expert said. The portrait cut, she explained, dates back to the Mughal era, when such diamonds were used to encase miniature paintings and royal portraits — a heritage that gives the cut its name.
The jeweller added that the portrait cut symbolises strength, clarity, and character, and is believed to have origins in early Golconda diamonds, which were shaped using limited cutting techniques of the time. The cut requires diamonds of exceptional quality due to its transparent structure, and its broad surface often appears more striking than modern brilliant cuts.
Historically, the portrait cut was favoured by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, creator of the Taj Mahal — a global symbol of enduring love.
Experts say Samantha’s choice reflects a blend of tradition, elegance, and timeless romance, making the ring a meaningful emblem of the couple’s union.
