In a meeting that was expected to be tense and ideologically charged, U.S. President Donald Trump surprised the nation on Friday by displaying an unexpectedly warm and almost admiring tone toward New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani — a politician he has spent years publicly criticising.
What had been billed as a confrontation of opposites unfolded instead like an unlikely political camaraderie. Despite his history of disparaging remarks about Mamdani, Trump repeatedly offered compliments throughout the encounter, leaving observers stunned.
When a reporter reminded Trump that he had previously threatened to cut federal funding to New York City if Mamdani won, the president responded with unexpected softness. “I expect to be helping him, not hurting him,” Trump said, prompting widespread speculation about his sudden shift in attitude.
Mamdani, meanwhile, stayed disciplined and focused, refusing to be drawn into a personal back-and-forth. When questioned on contentious issues — from Gaza to deportations to Trump’s past insults — he consistently redirected the conversation to affordability and economic challenges facing New Yorkers.
Pressed on his past statements accusing the Israeli government of committing genocide, Mamdani clarified his stance directly in front of Trump, saying: “I’ve spoken about the Israeli government committing genocide and I’ve spoken about our government funding it. I shared in our meeting with the president the concern New Yorkers have about wanting their tax dollars to go toward their ability to afford basic dignity.”
Trump, rather than reacting defensively, continued his unusual display of patience. When reminded that Mamdani had previously called him a “fascist,” the president brushed it off with a smile. “That’s OK. You can just say yes. It’s easier than explaining,” he joked. Asked about being labeled a “despot,” Trump shrugged: “I’ve been called much worse than a despot.”
The moment that fuelled social media frenzy came when an official photo was released showing Trump looking at Mamdani with what many described as “unexpected admiration” — a look that quickly went viral across platforms.
What was scheduled as a standard policy meeting has now evolved into one of the most talked-about political interactions of the week, with the president’s unexpectedly cordial behaviour raising questions, generating memes, and sparking widespread public fascination.
