Former champion Liudmila Samsonova made a winning return to Washington on Monday by defeating sixth-seeded Madison Keys 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round.

Samsonova, who won the tournament in 2022, overcame 10 aces from the American and dominated behind her first serve. She won 80% of her first-serve points, claiming 35 of 44 to seal a comeback victory.
Seeded players progress in Washington
Eighth seed Emma Navarro secured a straight-sets victory over Sofia Kenin, winning 6-3, 7-5 to book her place in the second round.
Meanwhile, seventh-seeded Leylah Fernandez of Canada comfortably defeated Poland’s Magda Linette 6-1, 6-4.
Additionally, Ashlyn Krueger, Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Indonesia’s Janice Tjen also advanced after winning their opening-round matches.
Volynets upsets Golubic in Memphis
At the Memphis Classic, Katie Volynets produced a hard-fought upset by defeating third-seeded Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (3).
Volynets recovered after trailing 3-0 in the deciding set and completed an impressive comeback. Golubic struggled with her serve, committing eight double faults and failing to hit a single ace.
Fifth-seeded Camila Osorio of Colombia also progressed with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Australian qualifier Storm Hunter. Osorio won 76% of her first-serve points, converting 26 of 34.
Other first-round winners included Australia’s Maya Joint, Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova and Tatiana Prozorova, Germany’s Tatjana Maria, and Belarus’ Iryna Shymanovich.
