Netflix and Shondaland are developing a new limited series centred on a younger version of Violet Bridgerton, the family matriarch in the hit period drama Bridgerton.

The companies announced the project on Instagram on Thursday, saying the time had come to focus on the matriarch of the Bridgerton family.

“A new series, chronicling the romance of a young Violet and Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, is underway,” the announcement said.

English actress Ruth Gemmell has portrayed Violet throughout the first four seasons of the original series. The upcoming spin-off will explore Violet’s earlier life and her romance with Edmund, the father of the Bridgerton siblings.

The limited series has yet to receive an official title. It will be the latest expansion of the Bridgerton universe, following the success of the spin-off Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini, who worked on Queen Charlotte, will serve as showrunners, writers and executive producers on the new project.

The franchise is based on Julia Quinn’s novels and follows the romantic lives of members of the Bridgerton family during the Regency era.

Meanwhile, production on Bridgerton season five is underway in London. The upcoming season will focus on Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, portrayed by Masali Baduza.

Since its debut in 2020, Bridgerton has become a global hit, attracting audiences with its romantic storylines, lavish period settings and diverse cast.
