Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the move to impose an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), according to media reports. The federal cabinet made the recommendation during an emergency meeting on Sunday, citing the province’s deteriorating security situation and concerns over counterterrorism efforts. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the cabinet reviewed the law and order situation and recommended that the prime minister advise President Asif Ali Zardari to exercise his constitutional powers under Articles 232 and 234. The advice was subsequently sent to the President’s House for consideration. The federal government has cited rising militant violence and what it describes as the provincial government’s disengagement from counterterrorism operations as reasons for the proposed measures.
