Australia have suffered a major setback in the Ashes 2025–26 series with fast bowler Josh Hazlewood ruled out for the remainder of the campaign due to persistent leg injuries. Head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that the 34-year-old’s hamstring and Achilles problems have ended any chance of a comeback, despite initial optimism over his recovery.
Hazlewood, who missed the opening Tests in Perth and Brisbane, will now shift his focus to regaining fitness ahead of the T20 World Cup scheduled for February and March in India and Sri Lanka.
“Really, really flat for him,” McDonald said. “A couple of setbacks that we didn’t see coming. We thought he would play a huge part in the series. This latest issue is separate from his previous hamstring injury.”
In more positive news for Australia, captain Pat Cummins is expected to return for the third Test at Adelaide Oval starting December 17. The 32-year-old has been sidelined since July with a back injury but has completed extensive match simulations at Allan Border Field, putting him on track for selection.
“We feel the simulation in the nets has him skill-ready. His body’s ready,” McDonald said. “Barring anything unexpected, I expect Pat to be tossing the coin and wearing the blazer.”
Usman Khawaja has been cleared to play, though McDonald reiterated that team selection will continue to be based on conditions and strategy. Travis Head and Jake Weatherald stepped in during Khawaja’s absence in Brisbane.
“We’re taking this Test by Test,” McDonald added. “What worked for the pink-ball Test at the Gabba may not be the same for Adelaide.”
Australia lead the series 2–0 under interim captain Steve Smith, with their dominance easing the blow of Hazlewood’s absence. Cummins’ return is set to further strengthen an already commanding bowling attack.
