United appeared destined for defeat at the London Stadium after Tomas Soucek’s second-half goal had given the hosts the lead. However, Sesko’s stoppage-time finish ensured Carrick extended his unbeaten run to five matches since taking charge following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal.
Carrick, who has overseen victories against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham, saw his side deliver their least convincing performance under his tenure. Nevertheless, the late equaliser kept United fourth in the Premier League table, one point ahead of Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification.
West Ham, meanwhile, remain in relegation trouble. The Hammers sit third from bottom, two points behind Nottingham Forest, who have a game in hand against Wolves.
The hosts had earlier threatened through Crysencio Summerville, whose powerful effort was tipped away by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens. United struggled to impose themselves in the first half, with Luke Shaw’s close-range attempt cleared off the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Amad Diallo firing into the side-netting.
West Ham broke the deadlock five minutes after the interval when Soucek finished from close range following Jarrod Bowen’s low cross. Defensive lapses from Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo contributed to the goal.
United thought they had equalised in the 63rd minute, but Casemiro’s header was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. Joshua Zirkzee then headed narrowly wide in stoppage time as Carrick’s side pushed forward.
Just when defeat seemed inevitable, Bryan Mbeumo delivered a precise cross that Sesko converted from 10 yards, sealing a crucial point for United.
