KARACHI — Actor and model Khaqan Shahnawaz on Tuesday issued a public apology after facing criticism for mocking content creator Ali Abdullah over his speech impediment.

The controversy began after Abdullah appeared on Piyara Ramzan on Express TV on February 25. During the programme, hosted by Javeria Saud, Abdullah was asked to comment on several TikTok clips.
In one clip, TikTok creator Jawad World parodied an irritated diner at sehri. Responding to the video, Abdullah joked about the character’s meal and appearance, and also made a remark referencing “special days,” a euphemism for menstruation, prompting laughter from the host.
Shahnawaz later posted a video criticising Abdullah’s comments and mocking his manner of speaking. In the clip, he questioned Abdullah’s right to comment on others’ appearances and lifestyles, adding that social media fame can sometimes “get to one’s head.” He urged the content creator to be more humble.
However, Shahnawaz’s remarks sparked backlash online, with many social media users pointing out that Abdullah has a speech impediment and accusing the actor of insensitivity.
Following the criticism, Shahnawaz said he was unaware of Abdullah’s condition and had removed the video. He apologised for any offence caused but maintained that making jokes about someone’s financial position or menstruation on national television was inappropriate.
Actor Sabeena Farooq also weighed in on the issue, stating that Abdullah’s humour reflected his personal comedic style and describing Shahnawaz’s comments as “wrong on so many levels.”
The exchange has since ignited a broader debate online about responsible humour, public criticism and the impact of social media reactions on public figures.
