The Uruguayan midfielder struck three goals within a 22-minute spell to give the Spanish giants a commanding advantage ahead of the second leg in Manchester next week.
Despite missing several key players, including Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo, Madrid produced one of their most convincing displays of the season against the English champions coached by Pep Guardiola.
Valverde opened the scoring in the 20th minute after racing onto a long ball from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and calmly finishing past City’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Seven minutes later, the midfielder doubled the lead after receiving a pass from Vinícius Júnior and drilling the ball into the net.
Valverde completed his first career hat-trick before half-time with a spectacular volley, flicking the ball past defender Marc Guéhi before finishing clinically to send the home crowd into celebration.
Madrid had a chance to extend their lead in the second half when Vinícius Júnior won a penalty after being fouled by Donnarumma. However, the Italian goalkeeper saved the Brazilian forward’s low attempt.
City struggled to create clear opportunities throughout the match, with their star striker Erling Haaland largely contained by Madrid’s defence.
After the match, Valverde said the victory was a special moment for both him and the team.
“It was incredible. You dream of nights like this,” he said, adding that the result would boost the squad’s confidence.
Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa praised his team’s performance, saying the players had responded strongly despite doubts over their recent form.
Meanwhile, Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva admitted the defeat was difficult but insisted the team still believed they could turn the tie around in the second leg.
The two teams will meet again in Manchester next Tuesday to decide who advances to the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition.
