Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said the government was taking every possible step to protect Pakistan’s children from polio. He added that eliminating the disease remains a top national priority.

The prime minister made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of the Polio Oversight Board at the Prime Minister’s House. He urged all stakeholders to strengthen cooperation. He also called for faster efforts to eradicate the virus.

The delegation included Mike McGovern, Chair of Rotary’s Polio Oversight Board, Chris Elias of the Gates Foundation, Dr Hanan Balkhy of WHO EMRO, and representatives from UNICEF, Gavi and other partner organisations.

Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the delegation and thanked international partners for supporting Pakistan’s anti-polio campaign. He said their continued cooperation had strengthened the country’s fight against the disease.

He directed authorities to focus on polio hotspots in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Furthermore, he called for a stronger strategy to eliminate the virus from high-risk districts.

The prime minister thanked Rotary International, the Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, KSrelief and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He said their support remained vital to Pakistan’s eradication programme.

In addition, Shehbaz Sharif praised Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal, Minister of State for Health, Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq, the National Polio Coordinator and other officials. He thanked them for their continued efforts.

The delegation welcomed the government’s progress in the anti-polio campaign. It also praised the prime minister’s commitment to achieving a polio-free Pakistan.

Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal, Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq and other senior government officials also attended the meeting.
