In a statement, Rescue 1122 said its diving team recovered the child’s body from Sagian, around five kilometres from Bhatti Chowk, where the incident occurred on Wednesday evening.
Earlier, Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmed said emergency services received a call at 7:32pm reporting that a mother and her daughter had fallen into an open sewer line. He added that rescue operations continued throughout the night without interruption.
In the early hours of Thursday, Lahore Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Operations Faisal Kamran told media that the mother’s body had been found at a disposal station on Outfall Road.
Responding to questions about water flow in the sewer, Kamran said the current was strong at the time of the incident due to peak hours, but subsided later in the night.
When asked whether the family would pursue legal action, he said police would proceed in line with the family’s wishes.
Meanwhile, Lahore Operations SSP Mohammad Tauqir said police had taken the woman’s husband into custody on Wednesday after allegations were raised by the victim’s father, who claimed the couple had been facing marital issues for several months.
According to police, the husband was the person who initially contacted Rescue 1122, stating that his wife and minor daughter had fallen into the sewer. The woman’s father expressed doubts over his son-in-law’s role, prompting authorities to detain him for questioning.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by uncovered sewer lines and manholes across Punjab.
Last month, a seven-year-old boy died after falling into an open manhole in Dhanote town near Lodhran in Bahawalpur district, underscoring persistent safety concerns.
