Karachi Faces Backlash Over Illegal Construction During Eid Holidays
KARACHI – Illegal construction in the city has once again come under scrutiny after reports emerged of unauthorized multi-storey additions during the Eid holidays in District East, raising serious concerns over regulatory enforcement and public safety.
Sindh Police Prioritizing Crime Prevention and Law & Order, Says IGP Javed Alam Odho
According to reports from Block 2, Plot No. 866, two to three additional floors were allegedly constructed on an existing building without approval. The activity reportedly continued openly during the holidays, with no immediate intervention from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) or local district administration.
Residents and observers claim that this is not an isolated incident but part of a recurring pattern of weak oversight, alleged negligence, and possible collusion between builders and officials. The lack of enforcement has triggered public criticism and renewed questions about governance in one of Pakistan’s largest metropolitan cities.
The situation contrasts with recent government directives issued by Sindh’s local authorities, including Provincial Minister for Local Government Nasir Hussain Shah, who has emphasized preparedness for weather-related emergencies. Critics argue that unchecked illegal construction undermines such efforts and reflects a gap between policy and implementation.
Urban safety experts have warned that unauthorized vertical expansion can compromise structural integrity, increasing the risk of building collapse, particularly during heavy rains or seismic activity. They stress that such violations pose a direct threat to residents’ lives and surrounding communities.
Amid growing public concern, calls have intensified for immediate action. Citizens and stakeholders are urging the DG SBCA Muzammil Hussain to take notice of the incident, while demanding that the Deputy Commissioner of District East conduct an urgent inspection of the site.
Demands also include demolition of the illegally constructed floors and strict accountability measures against those responsible, including any officials found negligent in enforcing building regulations.
As illegal construction continues to surface across parts of Karachi, the issue highlights ongoing challenges in urban planning, enforcement, and regulatory transparency. The central question remains whether authorities can act decisively before such violations lead to a larger safety crisis.
