KARACHI: Residents of Karachi are grappling with a worsening water crisis as repeated power outages by K-Electric continue to disrupt the city’s water pumping operations.

The city’s critical K-3 pumping station suffered a major breakdown at midnight, and the resulting cable fault remained unresolved for 17 hours, according to a spokesperson for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC). This follows a prior outage on November 18, when electricity was restored only after a 41-hour delay. Hours later, the same cable fault forced another shutdown. Technical issues also led to a temporary halt on November 17.
These repeated disruptions have caused an estimated loss of 335 million gallons of water, severely impacting supply in areas including North Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, Gulistan-e-Johar, Scheme 33, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, New Karachi, Saddar, and Clifton.
Earlier incidents at the Dhabeji pumping station on November 5, 11, 13, and 15 similarly resulted in prolonged power outages and exacerbated water shortages across the city.
KW&SC officials stressed that despite all administrative and technical measures, inconsistent electricity supply continues to hinder pumping operations. They urged K-Electric management to restore stable power to pumping stations immediately to normalize water supply in Karachi.
