Lithuania air warning prompts NATO fighter jets to respond to an unidentified flying object over the Baltic region.Lithuania issues an air warning after an unidentified flying object prompts a NATO response.

Lithuania urged residents in central and northern parts of the country to seek shelter for about an hour on Sunday morning after an unidentified flying object was detected, according to the military and the national crisis management centre.

During the red air warning, NATO air policing fighter jets were dispatched to the area and Kaunas airport was temporarily closed, the crisis management centre said.

The alert prompted heightened security measures as authorities assessed the potential threat. Officials did not immediately identify the object or provide further details about its origin.

Neighbouring Latvia also issued a yellow air warning in some regions bordering Lithuania during the same period, citing a possible threat, the Latvian army said. The warning was later lifted.

The incidents come amid repeated reports of Ukrainian drones entering NATO airspace in the Baltic region in recent months. Kyiv has said some drones were diverted from their intended routes by Russian electronic jamming.

These incursions have raised concerns among NATO members that Russia’s war in Ukraine could spill beyond Ukrainian territory and create further security risks for countries along the alliance’s eastern flank.

Lithuania and Latvia are both NATO members, and their airspace forms part of the alliance’s Baltic air policing mission, which monitors and helps protect the region’s skies.
