Netanyahu Visit: US President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will visit Washington next week for talks.

Trump made the announcement during his speech at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. During his remarks, he also repeated controversial comments about Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.

Trump joked that he would send Schumer “a beautiful Palestinian outfit” so he could welcome Netanyahu. He also described Schumer as “Palestinian,” although the senator is Jewish. Trump further joked that sharia law had become Schumer’s “new founding.”

Advocacy groups criticise remarks

Previously, Muslim and Jewish advocacy groups criticised Trump for using the term “Palestinian” as an insult. They argued that the remarks were disrespectful and offensive.

Netanyahu’s schedule confirmed

Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s office confirmed that the Israeli leader will arrive in Washington on Monday. He will meet Trump on Tuesday.

In addition, Netanyahu plans to attend the funeral of the late US Senator Lindsey Graham, according to his office.

Regional tensions remain high

The visit comes as tensions involving Israel, Iran and the United States continue across the Middle East. Therefore, the meeting is expected to focus on regional security and bilateral cooperation.
