Released in October 2022, the film became one of Pakistan’s most successful and critically acclaimed productions, earning praise both locally and internationally. The movie is a modern reboot of the classic Punjabi cult film and stars Fawad Khan and Hamza Ali Abbasi in lead roles.
Sharing the news on social media, Bilal Lashari described the release as a “huge moment for Pakistani cinema,” saying it marks the first time a Pakistani film has entered China’s highly restricted foreign film quota system.
The director added that the release could open new opportunities for Pakistani films in international markets and help showcase local storytelling on a global stage.
Despite China’s strict regulations on foreign films, several Pakistani productions have previously reached Chinese audiences. In 2020, Parwaaz Hai Junoon became one of the first Pakistani films in decades to receive a theatrical release in China.
Industry experts believe the Chinese release of The Legend of Maula Jatt could further strengthen cultural and entertainment ties between Pakistan and China while boosting the global recognition of Pakistan’s film industry.
