Portugal booked their place in the World Cup last 16 after substitute Gonçalo Ramos scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner in a 2-1 victory over Croatia on Thursday.

Ramos headed home in the fourth minute of added time after meeting a precise cross from Rafael LeĂ£o. As a result, Portugal advanced to the knockout stage after an intense contest in Toronto.

However, Croatia thought they had forced extra time when JoÅ¡ko Gvardiol found the net in the closing moments. VAR later ruled the goal out for offside, ending Croatia’s hopes and sparking angry reactions from their supporters.

Ronaldo reaches another World Cup milestone

Earlier, Croatia took the lead in the 53rd minute through Ivan Perišić, who finished calmly past goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

Meanwhile, Portugal responded after VAR awarded a penalty for a foul on Renato Veiga.

Consequently, Cristiano Ronaldo converted from the spot to level the score. It marked his first goal in the World Cup knockout stage and made him the oldest player to score in that phase of the tournament.

Portugal to face Spain

Croatia continued to create chances after the equaliser. However, Diogo Costa produced key saves to keep Portugal in the match.

Later, Ronaldo left the field in the 81st minute to a standing ovation from the crowd of more than 43,000 spectators.

Finally, Ramos delivered the decisive goal to seal Portugal’s victory.

Portugal will now face Spain in the last 16 on Monday.

After the final whistle, Portugal’s players honoured their late teammate Diogo Jota by holding up his number 21 shirt.
