Russia launched a large-scale overnight assault on Ukraine using dozens of strike drones along with ballistic and cruise missiles, targeting energy infrastructure and killing at least one person, Ukrainian officials said on Sunday.

The attacks struck the capital Kyiv and surrounding areas, as well as the Black Sea port city of Odesa and several central regions of the country.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strikes also affected the Dnipro, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Poltava and Sumy regions, with the primary focus on Ukraine’s energy sector. Residential buildings and railway infrastructure were also damaged during the attacks.
“Moscow continues to invest in strikes more than in diplomacy,” Zelenskyy said, noting that Russia had launched more than 1,300 drones, over 1,400 guided aerial bombs and 96 missiles against Ukraine within a single week.
Regional officials reported that one person was killed and at least five others were injured in the Kyiv region, where more than a dozen homes were damaged across multiple districts. Authorities in Odesa said drone strikes on energy facilities caused fires that were later extinguished.
Ukraine’s air force stated that Russia fired 50 missiles and 297 drones overnight, with air defence systems intercepting or neutralising 33 missiles and 274 drones.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on the international community to impose tougher sanctions on Moscow, saying continued attacks on infrastructure amounted to ongoing terror.
The strikes come as diplomatic efforts led by the United States to broker a peace agreement between the two sides have stalled, with disagreements over control of parts of the eastern Donbas region remaining a major obstacle.
Since launching its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s power stations, electrical substations and gas infrastructure. Moscow denies deliberately targeting civilians, while Kyiv maintains the strikes are intended to damage civilian life and weaken national morale.
