China is facing widespread flooding after its strongest typhoon of the year brought record rainfall and heavy downpours across the country.

Beijing issued its second-highest rainstorm warning on Wednesday. Authorities suspended 250 bus routes and closed 150 tourist attractions, while 10 subway lines operated at reduced speeds.

Heavy rain turned a major road in Beijing into a river. Videos showed cars and buses partly submerged as traffic came to a standstill.

Changping district recorded 90.7mm (3.6 inches) of rain in one hour after 9am on Wednesday, according to local authorities.

The typhoon weakened after travelling about 6,000km (3,700 miles). It made landfall in Zhejiang province on Sunday. However, its remnants are carrying tropical moisture deep inland and increasing the risk of further flooding.

In Yuhuan, a coastal city in Zhejiang, nearly 200mm (8 inches) of rain flooded nearby streets. Dozens of cars gathered on a bridge that remained above the rising water.

Authorities also reported record rainfall in parts of Zhejiang, Henan and Hubei provinces.

Wugang recorded 209.5mm (8.2 inches) of rain in a single day in August, breaking its previous record. Xiangyang also recorded 169.1mm (6.6 inches).

Residents in northern and central China are preparing for several more days of heavy rain as the storm’s extensive rain bands move inland.

Scientists have increasingly linked extreme weather events to climate change. An emerging El Niño pattern has also contributed to higher temperatures and concerns over more frequent and intense typhoons.

China is now turning to artificial intelligence weather models to improve forecasting and strengthen its response to extreme weather.

Heavy rainfall causes billions of dollars in economic losses each year by disrupting manufacturing and damaging crops.
