The Sindh government has decided to propose raising the retirement age of university professors from 60 to 65 years.

Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah announced the plan during a meeting with vice-chancellors of 32 public universities in the province. He said a summary seeking approval for the change would be submitted to the provincial cabinet.

Shah said Sindh allocated Rs44.46 billion in grants-in-aid to public universities, adding that the province provided universities with higher grants than other provinces.

He also called for a comprehensive policy and clear criteria for establishing new university campuses. He said decisions should reflect academic requirements and financial needs.

The meeting also discussed concerns raised by vice-chancellors over the Right to Information law. According to the chief secretary, university heads said information requests were sometimes made without a clear link to the public interest.

Shah identified pension liabilities as a major financial challenge for universities. He urged institutions to avoid unnecessary recruitment, particularly in non-teaching departments, to help reduce their financial burden.

The proposed increase in the retirement age is subject to approval by the provincial cabinet.
