Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide met Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Thursday. Eide led a senior Norwegian delegation during the meeting. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the discussions covered regional security, bilateral relations and matters of mutual interest. Field Marshal Asim Munir briefed the delegation on Pakistan’s position on global peace and regional stability. He stressed the need for greater cooperation to tackle shared security challenges. Eide praised the professional role of the Pakistan Army in promoting peace and stability in the region. Both sides also agreed to strengthen defence and security cooperation. The meeting formed part of Norway’s wider engagement with Pakistan. Earlier, Eide held delegation-level talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad. During those talks, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ways to expand cooperation in trade, investment, climate change, maritime affairs and education. They also agreed to promote stronger people-to-people links. Both sides welcomed the contribution of Pakistan’s sizeable community in Norway. He commended Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts to support regional and global peace. The Norwegian minister also recognised the roles of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Asim Munir during the period of heightened regional tensions. Eide described the situation as a serious threat to global peace and the world economy. He also highlighted the role of Norwegian companies operating in Pakistan.
