Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says talks in Oman on Monday will focus on establishing a new maritime route through the Hormuz Strait, as Tehran prepares to present details of an agreement with Oman. Araghchi said Iran would also provide a map showing the proposed route during the talks. In an interview with an Arab television channel, the foreign minister stressed that the agreement with Oman should not be interpreted as a decision by Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He said the United States would first need to comply with a memorandum of understanding reached in Islamabad before Iran could reopen the waterway. Araghchi also said countries in the region should take sole responsibility for maintaining security and stability in the area. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea. Any prolonged disruption to shipping through the strait could affect global energy markets, oil prices and international maritime traffic. The planned talks in Oman are therefore likely to attract close attention from regional governments and international markets as efforts continue to address the dispute surrounding access through the waterway.
