Iran war becomes a major political issue for Donald Trump after Republicans lose control of Congress.Donald Trump faces political pressure after the Iran war contributed to Republican losses in the US midterm elections.

US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that the war against Iran contributed to his Republican Party’s sweeping losses in the midterm elections. However, analysts say he faces limited options as pressure mounts to end the conflict.

Democrats secured control of both the Senate and House of Representatives in Tuesday’s vote, leaving Trump politically weakened as he enters the final two years of his presidency.

The president now faces a difficult choice between pursuing a diplomatic settlement with Iran and following through on threats to intensify military action. The conflict has driven up fuel prices in the United States, adding to voters’ concerns about the cost of living.

“Trump is now in a bind: Escalation offers no clear path to victory and risks further wrecking his presidency, while diplomacy offers a potential way out,” said Sina Toossi, a senior non-resident fellow at the Center for International Policy.

Toossi told AFP that the incoming Democratic Congress would gain significant oversight and funding powers in January, further limiting Trump’s options.

On Wednesday, Trump acknowledged that it was “largely true” that the Iran war and higher fuel prices had contributed to the Republican defeat.

Despite the electoral setback, he maintained that he would make the same decision again, repeating a position he had expressed after polls closed on Tuesday.

Vice President JD Vance offered a more direct assessment of the Republican losses.

“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” Vance wrote on X.

The rising cost of living and the conflict with Iran featured prominently in voters’ concerns. Even traditionally reliable Republican supporters, including farmers, expressed frustration over higher energy costs.

Charles Hall, executive director of the North Carolina Soybean Producers Association, told AFP that steep energy prices were causing growing despair among farmers.

Hall, who also voted in North Carolina, pointed to significant shifts towards Democrats in the state. He said the results suggested voters were expressing opposition to the administration’s policies, including high diesel prices.

Iran retaliated against US-Israeli strikes launched in late February by blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments. The disruption sent oil prices higher.

However, James Lindsay, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, said the Republican defeat reflected broader dissatisfaction with Trump’s agenda, not just the Iran war.

He described the Democratic victory as a “blue tsunami” and said voters had rejected much of the president’s programme.

Trump won the 2024 presidential election on promises to make life more affordable. But Lindsay said many Americans believed living costs had continued to rise.

He added that the Iran conflict had worsened the situation by pushing up petrol and diesel prices. Lindsay also criticised Trump’s public response to the economic hardship faced by Americans.

Toossi said the election results sent a clear message that voters wanted relief from the economic consequences of the war rather than further military escalation.

Senior Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer said on Wednesday that the conflict must end. Hakeem Jeffries, who is expected to become speaker of the House, also called for an end to the war.

It remains uncertain whether Trump will respond to the election results by pursuing a quick diplomatic settlement or continue military pressure on Tehran.

Lindsay said escalating the conflict had always been a risky strategy, even before the election setback.

He warned that another round of intense attacks could trigger Iranian retaliation against installations across the Gulf, potentially causing the conflict to spread further.

“This could spiral out of control,” he said, adding that Trump’s alternatives were also difficult.

Maintaining the US naval blockade in the region is placing pressure on American military resources, while negotiations have yet to produce clear progress.

Lindsay said Trump remained in a difficult position regardless of which course he chose. He added that if Vance’s criticism reflected the views of other Republican lawmakers, further escalation could expose the president to additional political risks.
