China has described the US midterm elections as an internal matter, while reiterating its desire to strengthen communication and cooperation with Washington. Speaking at a press briefing, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Beijing was willing to work with the United States to implement the consensus reached by the two countries’ leaders. The spokesperson also addressed developments in the Middle East and the Gulf, highlighting China’s commitment to strengthening dialogue with Saudi Arabia, Iran and other countries in the region. China supports resolving differences between Iran and the United States through dialogue and negotiations, the spokesperson said, stressing the importance of diplomacy in easing regional tensions. The comments came as the political landscape in Washington shifted following the 2026 midterm elections. According to media projections and reported election results, Democrats captured control of both chambers of Congress, securing majorities in the House of Representatives and Senate. The party made gains in several traditionally Republican strongholds, including South Carolina, Kansas, Texas, Iowa and Ohio. The results dealt a significant setback to President Donald Trump’s administration and reflected voter concerns over several issues, including the rising cost of living, fuel prices, tariffs and the US war against Iran, which began in February. Democratic control of Congress is expected to give the opposition greater influence over Trump’s legislative agenda. It will also strengthen its ability to investigate the administration and exercise congressional oversight during the final two years of his presidency.
