The US Congress officially certified Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in the November 2024 election, paving the way for his swearing-in on January 20. The certification took place during a brief, formal session held by the House of Representatives and Senate, presided over by Vice President Kamala Harris in her role as Senate president.

The procedure, typically a routine event, contrasted sharply with the chaotic scenes of four years ago when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump continues to falsely claim that his 2020 loss was due to fraud, despite his defeat by Democratic President Joe Biden.
“Congress certifies our great election victory today – a big moment in history. MAGA!” Trump celebrated on his social media platform Truth Social.
This year’s certification confirmed that Trump secured 312 Electoral College votes, defeating Harris’s 226 votes. The final results support the initial findings and set the stage for Trump’s upcoming presidency. With Republicans holding majorities in both the Senate and House, Trump is expected to have significant backing for his proposed policies, including tax cuts and stricter immigration laws.
Heightened security surrounded the Capitol during the certification process, with metal fences and police checkpoints in place. The certification was also a step toward reinforcing the legality of future election processes, particularly following the violence on January 6, 2021, when a mob stormed the Capitol to stop the certification of Biden’s victory. In response to this, Congress passed legislation to ensure that the certification process is conducted lawfully.
