Google has officially confirmed that a significant user experience overhaul for its Gemini app is underway, along with the development of a native macOS application, marking a major shift in the company’s strategy to improve accessibility and functionality across devices.
The confirmation came directly from senior Google executives in response to mounting user feedback that the current Gemini interface lacks the polish and fluidity of competitors such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Gemini App UX 2.0 in Development
Logan Kilpatrick, lead product for Google AI Studio and the Gemini API, revealed on social media that Google is making a “huge investment” in what he described as Gemini App UX 2.0. His remarks followed criticisms pointing out that Gemini’s front-end interface feels dated and fails to fully showcase its advanced capabilities.
The planned redesign is expected to streamline interactions, improve navigation, and make tools like multimodal inputs and file analysis more intuitive and accessible for everyday users.
Native macOS App Coming Soon
In one of the most anticipated updates, Google confirmed that a native Gemini app for macOS is in the works. Currently, desktop users rely solely on browser access, limiting integration with local system functions.
A native desktop app would allow:
Faster and smoother file uploads
Better interaction with system apps such as Notes, Notion, and Terminal
Enhanced support for emerging agentic AI workflows, where AI performs tasks autonomously on the user’s device
No launch timeline has been provided, but the announcement signals Google’s push to match the platform support already offered by ChatGPT.
Mobile App for Google AI Studio
Google is also expanding support for developers. Ammar Reshi, product and design lead for Google AI Studio, teased the development of a mobile app known internally as “Build Anything.” The app, planned for both Android and iPhone, will allow developers to continue their work on Gemini models directly from mobile devices.
Why It Matters
The accelerated pace of updates reflects Google’s refocused strategy: elevating the user experience after solidifying its model capabilities. By improving accessibility across desktop and mobile platforms, Google aims to position Gemini as a seamless, everyday AI tool for both consumers and developers.
