MOSCOW: Ukraine launched a drone attack targeting a key Russian oil terminal in Primorsk near the Finnish border on Monday, triggering a large fire at the facility, according to statements from both Moscow and Kyiv.

Satellite imagery showed flames and thick plumes of black smoke rising from the oil port in Primorsk, located on the Gulf of Finland and close to the border with European Union and NATO member Finland.
Russia said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed more than 70 drones over the wider region, which is not considered a primary frontline in the ongoing conflict. Alexander Drozdenko, governor of the Leningrad Oblast, confirmed that a fuel tank at the port was damaged, resulting in a fire.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said its forces targeted key fuel and energy infrastructure inside Russia, including facilities at Primorsk. It claimed that both the tank farm and oil-loading infrastructure were hit, causing damage and fires at the site.
Ukraine further stated that Primorsk handles approximately 60 million tonnes of oil annually, adding that Russia relies on oil revenues to sustain its war efforts.
The Ukrainian military also reported a separate strike on an oil refinery in the city of Ufa, located far from the front line, which reportedly caused a fire at the facility.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 251 drones overnight, of which 234 were intercepted and destroyed.
The exchange of drone and missile attacks continues to underscore the intensifying nature of strikes on energy infrastructure by both sides in the ongoing conflict.
