Trump Insists on Red Lines as US-Iran Peace Deal Remains Unresolved
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump will only approve a peace agreement with Iran if it fully meets Washington’s key conditions, a White House official said, as uncertainty continues over negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The remarks came after Trump attended a two-hour meeting in the White House Situation Room on Friday to review the status of negotiations. However, no final decision was reached regarding a potential agreement.
A White House official stated that President Trump would only support a deal that serves American interests and complies with his stated red lines, emphasizing that Iran must never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon.
While US officials have suggested that progress has been made in recent weeks, Iranian authorities maintain that no final agreement has been reached. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said discussions and message exchanges were continuing but stressed that Tehran would not accept demands imposed through pressure.
Trump has reiterated long-standing US demands, including restrictions on Iran’s nuclear activities and the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments.
Iranian state media challenged several aspects of Trump’s description of the proposed framework, with sources claiming that Tehran is seeking the release of frozen Iranian assets and rejecting suggestions that it would destroy its enriched uranium stockpile under current terms.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a conversation with Qatar’s Emir, said Tehran remains prepared to reach a “dignified framework” that could help end the conflict while protecting Iran’s national interests.
The possibility of a deal has continued to influence global energy markets, with investors closely monitoring developments that could affect shipping routes and regional stability.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high across the region, including in Lebanon, where clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah continue despite repeated calls for a ceasefire.
Diplomatic efforts are expected to continue in the coming days as both Washington and Tehran seek a path toward an agreement while significant differences remain unresolved.
