Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf has called for stronger efforts to protect marine ecosystems and promote sustainable use of ocean resources in his message on World Oceans Day 2026.
ISS Air Leak Prompts Temporary Evacuation Alert
World Oceans Day is observed annually on June 8 to raise awareness about the importance of oceans and encourage action to protect the marine environment.
This year’s theme, “Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet,” emphasizes the need to strengthen conservation measures and safeguard ocean ecosystems for future generations.
Oceans Play a Vital Global Role
In his message, Admiral Naveed Ashraf highlighted the critical role oceans play in supporting life on Earth.
He noted that oceans cover more than 70 percent of the planet’s surface and contribute significantly to climate regulation, biodiversity, global trade, and economic development.
Furthermore, oceans provide food, energy, and livelihoods for millions of people around the world.
However, he warned that marine pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change continue to threaten the health of ocean ecosystems.
Importance of Marine Protected Areas
The Naval Chief emphasized the value of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in conserving biodiversity and protecting fragile habitats.
According to him, MPAs help safeguard coral reefs, mangroves, fish populations, endangered marine species, and coastal ecosystems.
Moreover, effective management of these protected areas strengthens ecological resilience and supports sustainable fisheries.
As a result, MPAs play an important role in reducing the impact of climate change on marine environments.
He said the 2026 theme encourages countries to expand and strengthen such conservation measures to ensure healthier oceans.
Shared Responsibility for Ocean Conservation
Admiral Naveed Ashraf also stressed that protecting oceans requires collective action from governments, institutions, communities, and individuals.
He urged people to reduce plastic waste, prevent water pollution, support sustainable fishing practices, and participate in coastal clean-up activities.
In addition, he called on environmental organizations, maritime institutions, and other stakeholders to increase awareness about ocean conservation.
According to the Naval Chief, greater public engagement can help promote responsible use of marine resources.
Pakistan Navy’s Environmental Efforts
The Pakistan Navy, he said, remains committed to protecting the maritime environment and supporting sustainable use of marine resources.
Furthermore, the Navy regularly conducts coastal and sea-cleaning campaigns, environmental awareness programmes, and community outreach activities.
These initiatives help reduce marine pollution and contribute to the health of the Arabian Sea.
As custodian of Pakistan’s maritime frontiers, the Navy continues to support national and international efforts aimed at environmental protection and sustainability.
Call for Greater Collaboration
In his concluding remarks, Admiral Naveed Ashraf described ocean protection as both a shared responsibility and a national priority.
Therefore, he urged all stakeholders to review existing environmental measures and strengthen cooperation across sectors.
Moreover, he called for faster implementation of initiatives that protect marine ecosystems and preserve ocean productivity.
Finally, he emphasized that collective efforts can help ensure a healthy, resilient, and sustainable marine environment for present and future generations.
