US President Donald Trump said he knows little about Andy Burnham, Britain’s expected next prime minister.

Speaking late on Wednesday, Trump described Burnham as “extremely liberal”. He also suggested Burnham would be unlikely to support more oil drilling in the North Sea.
Trump repeated his long-standing argument that Britain should expand domestic energy production.
His comments came days after Keir Starmer announced his resignation. Starmer stepped down following pressure linked to falling poll ratings and weak local election results.
When reporters asked Trump about Burnham, he said he knew very little about him.
Trump referred to Burnham as a city mayor and questioned his likely approach to energy policy.
He said Burnham’s political views could limit support for new oil exploration projects.
Meanwhile, Trump again said he had previously advised Starmer to open the North Sea to additional drilling.
However, Trump avoided some of the sharper criticism he had directed at Starmer in recent weeks.
Relations between Washington and London faced pressure during Starmer’s period in office.
After becoming prime minister in 2024, Starmer worked to maintain close ties with Trump.
He also offered the US president a second state visit in 2025.
However, tensions emerged after Britain initially rejected a US request to use British bases for strikes against Iran.
Later, Starmer authorised the use of those facilities.
Meanwhile, Burnham remains the only declared candidate to replace Starmer as Labour leader.
Current expectations suggest Labour could appoint a new leader by mid-July if no challenger enters the race.
