Apple Lawsuit Apple Seeks Court Order to Block OpenAI From Using Alleged Trade Secrets

Apple Lawsuit entered a new phase on Monday after Apple asked a US judge to issue a preliminary injunction preventing OpenAI and two former Apple employees from accessing, using or disclosing alleged confidential information.

The iPhone maker also requested expedited discovery as it pursues its trade secrets case against OpenAI and the former employees, who now work for the artificial intelligence company.

Apple filed the lawsuit last month, accusing OpenAI and former employees Chang Liu and Tang Yew Tan of misappropriating trade secrets to support OpenAI’s expansion into consumer hardware.

Additionally, Apple asked the court to order depositions from Liu, Tan, OpenAI employee Yu-Ting Peng, and another unnamed OpenAI employee who previously worked at Apple.

Liu previously served as a senior system electrical engineer at Apple, while Tan was the company’s vice president of product design for the iPhone and Apple Watch.

Furthermore, Apple requested depositions from corporate representatives of OpenAI and io Products, OpenAI’s commercial arm, which is also named as a defendant in the case.

In its court filing, Apple argued that it would suffer “irreparable harm” if the court did not grant the injunction.

OpenAI Rejects Apple’s Claims

OpenAI denied the allegations and said Apple’s request was unnecessary.

In a blog post, the company stated that it neither possessed nor wanted Apple’s trade secrets and described the claims as based on false information.

Battle Over Future AI Devices

Apple filed the case in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

The lawsuit comes after OpenAI successfully defended itself against a separate legal challenge from Elon Musk’s xAI.

The dispute highlights growing competition over the next generation of AI-powered consumer devices. Industry analysts believe OpenAI is developing a smartphone or another hardware product that could compete with traditional devices and challenge Apple’s dominance in the consumer technology market.
