Field Marshal Asim Munir during Pakistan-Iran diplomatic engagement and regional peace efforts.Field Marshal Asim Munir is set to visit Tehran amid Pakistan’s regional peace efforts.

Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will visit Tehran on Monday for talks with senior Iranian officials, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Sunday.

Baghaei said the visit would focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation and building on Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace and security in the region.

Two Pakistani government sources also confirmed the visit, saying Pakistan and Iran remained in direct contact amid heightened regional tensions.

According to one source, discussions in Tehran are expected to cover recent developments in the conflict, including US President Donald Trump’s threat of tougher sanctions against Iran.

The talks are also expected to address peace efforts under Islamabad’s memorandum of understanding, the recent Pakistan-Turkiye-Saudi defence agreement and developments involving the Houthis.

The announcement came shortly after Field Marshal Munir spoke by telephone with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi early on Sunday.

According to the Iranian government, the two officials discussed regional developments and ways to strengthen peace, stability and security in West Asia.

Pakistan’s mediation efforts

Field Marshal Munir’s planned visit comes as Islamabad continues diplomatic efforts to help ease tensions between Iran and the United States.

Pakistan has sought to facilitate dialogue and support regional peace amid the conflict that began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February.

Munir previously visited Tehran in May as part of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts. He was accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

The field marshal had also travelled to Iran in April during earlier rounds of regional diplomacy.

In July, Munir accompanied Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Tehran to attend funeral rites for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

The latest visit is expected to provide an opportunity for Pakistani and Iranian officials to discuss bilateral relations as well as wider security challenges affecting the region.
