The 41-year-old forward, currently playing for Al Nassr, was included in coach Roberto Martinez’s squad announced on Tuesday.
Ronaldo, the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football with 143 goals, will once again lead Portugal in their quest for a first-ever World Cup title. He could also potentially face long-time rival Lionel Messi, who is expected to represent Argentina at a sixth World Cup as well.
Despite being sent off during Portugal’s final qualifying match against Ireland, Ronaldo avoided a three-match suspension and remains available for the tournament.
Martinez selected a strong squad featuring several top European stars, including Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Vitinha, and Joao Felix.
The coach dismissed concerns over Ronaldo’s age, saying World Cup performances are not determined by age or club form alone.
“In a World Cup, players respond differently. Our focus is on the entire group and preparing for the demands of the competition,” Martinez said.
He also paid tribute to late Portuguese striker Diogo Jota, saying his spirit would remain with the team throughout the tournament.
Portugal will play friendly matches against Chile and Nigeria before opening their World Cup campaign against DR Congo on June 17. They will also face Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K fixtures.
