Three Pakistani crew members were among five people killed when Puntland security forces launched an operation against pirates aboard the hijacked vessel Honor 25 in Somalia, according to a crew member. The Pakistani nationals killed in the operation were identified as Second Officer Kashif Umar, Third Engineer Mahmood Ansari and Oiler Rafiullah Khan. An Indian crew member identified as Tanveer and the vessel’s chief engineer from Myanmar were also killed. Details of the incident emerged during a conversation between the ship’s Second Engineer Hussain Yousaf and the chairperson of a charity organisation. Yousaf said Fourth Engineer Usman, along with Aqeel, Ameen and an Indonesian crew member, were injured during the security operation. He said the injured crew members were in critical condition and urgently needed medical treatment. Yousaf said the ship’s steering system was damaged during the operation. After the vessel was secured to another ship, it was being towed towards Bosaso, with the journey expected to take about three days. He appealed for immediate assistance for the injured crew members and called for helicopters to be dispatched to provide urgent medical treatment. The Honor 25 was hijacked by Somali pirates on April 21, 2026. Puntland security forces subsequently launched an operation to recover the vessel and secure its crew. The incident has raised concerns over the safety of seafarers involved in piracy-related incidents off the Somali coast, particularly as rescue operations can expose crew members to further risks.
