India Protests: Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday after days of nationwide youth-led protests over alleged examination irregularities, prompting organisers to call off demonstrations. They demanded reforms to the examination system and Pradhan’s resignation. Minister steps down In a statement posted on X, Pradhan said he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I am pained to see the events of the past 10 days. This is not a matter of personal prestige for me,” he said. Moreover, Pradhan said he did not want India’s youth to remain caught in what he described as a cycle of uncertainty. Protest organisers end demonstrations Following the announcement, the CJP said the government had accepted all of its demands during another round of talks. As a result, the group announced it would end the protests centred on Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Earlier in the week, police used tear gas and batons to disperse demonstrators attempting to march towards Parliament. Demonstrators celebrate decision Protesters celebrated Pradhan’s resignation at the demonstration site. “We have done it,” CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke told supporters after the announcement. The movement expanded beyond exam-related issues to include concerns about unemployment, opportunities for young people and criticism of the government’s policies. Opposition welcomes resignation Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi described Pradhan’s resignation as a significant development. Furthermore, he urged Prime Minister Modi to apologise to students and called for action against those responsible for violence during the protests. The demonstrations became one of the most significant public challenges to Modi’s government since his re-election in 2024.
