Reports by Iranian news agencies stated that Ghalibaf was nominated by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and the appointment was approved by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
Under his new role, Ghalibaf will oversee and coordinate various aspects of relations between Iran and China, reflecting Tehran’s continued focus on strengthening strategic ties with Beijing.
According to reports, the position had previously been held by Ali Larijani, who played a major role in advancing negotiations that led to the long-term 25-year cooperation agreement between Iran and China signed in 2021.
Ghalibaf has recently emerged as a prominent figure in Iran’s diplomatic efforts, including negotiations involving the United States following regional tensions and conflict involving Israel and Washington earlier this year.
Iranian media also reported that Tehran recently allowed several Chinese vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz after what Iranian authorities described as agreements related to maritime traffic management protocols.
